WT: mainstreaming, becoming more cultish, or disappearing?

is the wt mainstreaming into a more normal religion, is it tightening its grip, or are its leaders preparing to take the money and run, leaving its followers high and dry?

My take is that the captains steering the ship can see plenty of icebergs ahead and don't have a clue what to do about them. I think they realize to a certain extent that the ship is sinking. There's a perfect storm brewing, threatening to absolutely smash the whole edifice of the religion to bits - a googleload of negative and damning information available to absolutely anyone with a hook-up to the Internet and there's not a damn thing they can do about it! More and more vocal negative publicity - books, videos, blogs, you name it, it's growing exponentially worldwide!

The more they try to demonize education of every stripe, ergo the internet, the more they hijack their own efforts at cover-up. More and more are waking up to their endless threats of perdition to all and sundry, with no viable alternative except an endless life of DO MORE, DO MORE! The end is nigh! This generation is already hearing the end is nigh day and night from scientists and that end seems a very distinct possibility, in fact maybe more credible than a WT Armageddoom scenario.

At the last CA I attended, the question was put to the audience - how many of you brothers and sisters have come in within the last 15 years? 90%! Most of the oldtimers have gone the way of the dodo. Young people of this generation don't have the patience us older ones did. And they have control of the information they want to get or need to get. Just because some old fuddy duddy poo poohs education hasn't meant a hill of beans to them! Most of them are attending university/college despite the rantings of the GB. Already, congregation attendance is dwindling at a frenetic pace. The downfall will be complete by 2014, in my opinion. It's all downhill from here.

So, to answer your question, I don't see them mainstreaming (although the present adherents certainly are in greater and greater numbers); becoming more cultish? I don't see that either. My take is they are disappearing. They were like a mist - appearing for a little while and then disappearing...

....but there are a few who insist on just being plain nasty for no reason.. so, i am leaving for a while to concentrate on other stuff that i need to do.

right now, it is a degree of negativity that i just don't need in my life.

if you cannot post about even a benign subject without getting vicious comments it is time for a break.

I just wanted to say THANKS in return for all your fair, thought-provoking and balanced posts which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. It was so nice seeing you posting again after your last hiatus! I, for one, am sad to lose your insights. Here's hoping this is just a temporary situation! All the best in the meantime in all your endeavours.

Although I haven't made it to Chatauqua yet, I am hoping to get there some day. The place sounded awesome as you described it and I sent away for the brochures but not sure when a trip there will transpire. Just know that your contribution has been greatly valued by, dare I say it, most on this board...thanks again!

i have already enjoyed several late nights and early mornings catching up on some of the older posts.. .

when i first came across a link to this board my hand trembled as i held an outstretched finger just above the mouse button not quite sure whether i was prepared to go past what seemed to me to be the point of no return.

how can you dis-associate anyway, you never thought you were baptised as a watchtower society member, you thought your dedication was to god, so why formally disassociate from something you did not formally join?

I keep reading about how elders supposedly don't read these letters. Really? I have a hard time believing that. Just seems to me that most people's curiosity would get the better of them. And perhaps, in private, those letters do get read by somebody, even if the rest of the body doesn't see them. Not that I know, I'm just surmising.

What I love about using the word 'annull' in any letter is that it would probably confuckle the recipients no end, although if this method is used in profusion, the confuckle value might diminish. "Brother so-and-so - what do we do in this instance? Do we df? do we treat as da'd? Haven't seen this before, not sure how to proceed." Maybe the letter recipient thinks he needs to 'share the letter' with another brother to receive 'guidance' - so the letter gets read again! 'Perhaps Brooklyn or Legal needs to be involved'. The letter then gets forwarded. Ha, I love it!

Whatever works! I'm dreaming of a room FILLED with just such letters...files and files and files of them. I bet the 'legal' department is the fastest growing sector of the borg anyhow.

According to this brother's logic and he was the PO, Since there is now no date being proferred, it is NOW that the end will arrive. Convoluted? Yeah, for sure, but it works for some of them! Hah!

hi.. i have been a witness since birth (will be 30 years in june 2009).

got baptised when i was 15 (pressured into it by my parents, plus, i was promised my first home pc if i did get baptised before turning 16).. both my parents serve in the uk bethel.

i have an older brother and younger sister, both of which are witnesses.. i am married to a witness and live in cyprus (i am english).

All I can do is recommend this book that I just read: From the Ashes of Angels - The Forbidden Legacy of a Fallen Race - ANDREW COLLINS - ISBN 0-451-18926-4 - which I have found extremely enlightening - good deal of information concerning the Book of Enoch and its influence/relation to the Book of Daniel - also relates greatly to Genesis 6 and the Nephilim...

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, not able to post long posts...but that book is very informative...

Fundamentalism (in all its forms) basically sucks. The WT expects people to take the Bile(! should have typed Bible, but I like that typo) literally, although it is mostly myth, legend, allegory and metaphor. So many of its OT stories are based on much older myths and legends carried over from surrounding cultures. Good for you for starting to UNBELIEVE and dig a little deeper! They don't like when you puncture the veneer of Biblical authority.

What do you think about this letter to the JC???

hi guys and gals... you've probably read my earlier post regarding the prodigal son question and how the jc sent me packing... well, after talking with a good friend of mine i decided to move a new cong.

where the elders have known me for many years and actually appreciate me as a person... at first i was planning on handing this letter in person so i went but their meeting time had changed so i called one of the elders in my reinstatement jc and asked him for the meeting days but he said 'it would be better if i mailed it' to which i replied 'do you just not want me around your congregation, is that it?

he said again it would just be better to mail it again and left it at that.

I have seen many in your shoes, over the years. Punished without mercy of any kind, and it has been sickening to witness.

For what it's worth, my 2c wouuld be don't give them any more power over you. "Vengeance is mine, I will repay" says Jehovah. Yet these, for the most part, holier-than-thou, condescending, vindictive, power-hungry, manipulative so-called 'overseers' of the flock find it in their hearts to keep people waiting for forgiveness and 'reinstatement' for YEARS, at their whim! Who are they to judge? REINSTATEMENT??? What the heck is that? That's a word that isn't even in the Bible. I'd go to great lengths to point that out to them, if I was ever in your shoes. Further, Jehovah says I want mercy, and not sacrifice. They just don't get it.

I find this whole process an abuse of human rights. One day, I hope this religion is taken to task for just that abuse. The blood of those this CULT has emotionally, psychologically, physically and mentally crushed must cry out to heaven just as loud as the prophets who were killed in earlier times.

I pray that you find the strength to shake off the power they think they hold over you. In a really sick way, the more power they think they have over you, the more power they will wield, and not to your advantage. Anything you do say, will be used against you. The less you give them in writing the better.
